Fishing
World-class fly-fishing is easily accessible from Tomichi Lodge. Much of the Tomichi Creek flows through private property, however there is a one-mile stretch of public access just off US 50 below Sargents at the narrow part of the canyon. Another public stretch is from Snowblind Campground upstream nearly two miles toward Whitepine.
To the east you have the gold medal waters of the Arkansas River and to the west the gold medal waters of the Gunnison River. You’re approximately a 60-75 minute drive in either direction to access world-class fly-fishing.
For Arkansas River fly-fishing guides and float trips you’ll want to connect with Ark Anglers. If you’re interested in fishing the gold medal waters of the Gunnison River you’ll want to reach out to Gunnison River Guides. Both companies are locally owned and operated and have won customer service awards year after year through their respective local chambers of commerce.
For the DIY-ers, the Tomichi Creek runs right through the property at Tomichi Lodge. The stretches of Tomichi Creek on our property are tough to fish but not impossible. Nice little brook trout have been pulled from our property. As you hike down County Road 888 from our property you’ll parallel the creek past a handful of private properties. There are a few stretches of ponds and slower moving waters that are good for fishing and not on private property. If you fish these areas please be respectful of property owners and their land. Do not trespass.
If lake fishing is your thing you have two really good options within a 2-hour drive. To the north you can fish Twin Lakes in the Leadville area, home to some of the biggest Mackinaw (lake trout) in the state.
If you’re heading west, drive through/past Gunnison to Blue Mesa Reservoir to fish for huge Kokanee Salmon. Ice fishing is very popular January through March at Blue Mesa.
